Oh Death

To the soul that has lost so much
So much that even tears
have forgotten their source
I say, take heart

To the mind full of questions
With no answers
No one to ask
And no words that can ever explain
Why a farewell must be said
To a child so deeply loved

Oh Death
Why have you come for my little angel
At such an early age
What wrong did I do
What was I charged with
For you to sweep to my door

Each day we hope it’s just a bad dream
That we’ll wake
And find you crawling through the room again
Tugging at curtains
Pulling things apart with innocent wonder
Oh, if only wishes were horses

But even in this silence
Even in this ache
Know that your short light
Bright and wild
Left a mark on this world

Even now
Even in this deep and empty quiet
You are not gone from us
You live in the spaces between our thoughts
In the hush of every memory
In the shadow of every hope

Today we bid farewell to you
Oh dearest

Sleep well, little one
You were deeply loved
You still are
