Things That Refused

Things That Refused

A seed betrayed the sky.

It buried itself
in a dark room of dirt,
where worms wrote letters
no one could read.

Years later,
birds rented apartments
in its arms.

***

A river ignored
the compliments of puddles.

It passed mirrors
that begged to hold its face,
and followed a rumor
called Ocean.

The puddles laughed.

The ocean didn’t.

***

A key slept in a pocket
full of noise.

Locks introduced themselves
one by one.

It answered none.

Metal recognized metal,
but destiny recognized only one door.

***

The caterpillar vanished
without an announcement.

The leaves called it selfish.

The branches called it lost.

Then one morning,
something wearing its name
flew over them.

***

A star disappeared
before sunrise.

The world called it gone.

The star called it timing.

Not every absence
is a surrender.

Some departures
are simply shortcuts.

***

Strange things happen
to those who refuse small victories.

They look forgotten
while becoming.

They look late
while arriving.

They look empty
while carrying forests,
oceans,
wings,
and keys
to doors
no one else can see.
