AN UNFORGIVING HUNGER I

There is hunger-
A vicious, unforgiving hunger
It’s not that I don’t fantasize about theft also,
or dream of breaking the law,
or slipping into the shadows,
joining the darkness that
promises an easy way out.
I think of committing deep sin also,
of selling my soul for a taste of what I crave
of doing the worst,
just to make the ache stop-
Absolutely, I do.
But then, there’s something that holds me back-
A privilege-
Not of wealth or comfort
but of understanding
the morals and rules of life
that keep me from becoming
the very thing I fear.
Yet still, there is hunger –
A quiet reminder.
